Yumi Ninomiya Scott

Yumi Ninomiya Scott joined The Philadelphia Orchestra in 1984 and retired in 2016. She was concertmaster of the Main Line Symphony from 1981 to 2013 and has been a participant in the Casals Festival since 1994. She regularly performs on The Philadelphia Orchestra’s Chamber Music Series.
Ms. Scott began playing violin in Japan at the age of four. After several years of study at the Toho Conservatory of Music in Tokyo, she was accepted, in 1961, as a pupil of Ivan Galamian at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. Ms. Scott was a soloist with The Philadelphia Orchestra as a winner of the Senior Student Competition (now the Albert M. Greenfield Competition). In 1967 she became a member of the Chamber Symphony of Philadelphia, and from 1969 to 1981 was a member of the Curtis String Quartet, while concurrently playing with the Concerto Soloists of Philadelphia (now the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia). She has also performed with the ABC Symphony and the Japan Philharmonic.
Ms. Scott is on the faculties of the Curtis Institute of Music, Temple University, and Temple Music Prep. She is married to Henry Scott, retired bassist with The Philadelphia Orchestra. They have two sons, Kenji and Kohji.
