Robert Grossman
Robert Grossman, a Philadelphia native, studied bassoon and trumpet at the Settlement Music School with former Philadelphia Orchestra members Ferdinand Del Negro and Sigmund Hering. Mr. Grossman graduated cum laude from West Virginia University in 1977, and in 1980 he earned a Master of Library Science from Drexel University.
Between 1977 and 1978 Mr. Grossman was head of the library department at the Settlement Music School and studied bassoon privately with Sol Schoenbach. Mr. Grossman began work in the Philadelphia Orchestra Library as assistant librarian in the fall of 1979 and became principal in 2003.
Mr. Grossman is a founding member of the renaissance consort Spectra Musica and performs on a variety of dulcians collected during The Philadelphia Orchestra’s European tours. He is also a reviewer of audio equipment and music for AVShowrooms.com.
Mr. Grossman’s hobbies include gardening, yoga, and adopting retired show cats. He is a certified beer judge and a nationally recognized award-winning home brewer who has had several of his beer recipes brewed commercially. He lectures on the cultural, religious, and historical development of fermented beverages and has published several articles in Zymurgy, the Journal of the American Homebrewers Association.
