Mark Gigliotti

Mark Gigliotti has been a member of the Philadelphia Orchestra bassoon section since 1982. After graduating from the Curtis Institute of Music, he started his professional career as Principal Bassoonist with the Hague Philharmonic Orchestra in the Netherlands for three seasons, and was later Principal Bassoonist with the Pittsburgh Symphony for one season.
Mr. Gigliotti has appeared as a soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra, including performances with Riccardo Muti and Wolfgang Sawallisch, and as soloist with the Hague Philharmonic, the Taipei Symphony Orchestra, the Hilton Head Orchestra, and many orchestras in the Philadelphia area. He recorded a solo CD with the Taipei SymphonyOrchestra in 2001. He has performed frequently on the Philadelphia Orchestra Chamber Music Series, the Saratoga Springs Chamber Music Series, and the Philadelphia Chamber Ensemble, of which he is a member.
While living in the Netherlands, Mark Gigliotti studied conducting with Dutch conductor Kees Bakels, and later worked with former Philadelphia Orchestra Resident Conductor Luis Biava. He has appeared as guest conductor in Bulgaria with the Plovdiv State Opera Philharmonic, the Pazardjick Symphony Orchestra, the Bourgas State Opera Philharmonic, and the Pleven Symphony Orchestra, and will return for engagements during the 2015-16 season. In 2007, he was a finalist for the position of Assistant Conductor of the Philadelphia Orchestra. He has been Music Director of the Lower Merion Symphony since 2005, has been Resident Conductor at the Philadelphia International Music Festival since 2011, and has conducted student ensembles for the Philadelphia Orchestra Education Department. Mark Gigliotti has also conducted the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra, the Orchestra Society of Philadelphia, and the Luzerne Music Festival.
Mr. Gigliotti has been Instructor of Bassoon at the New School of Music, the College of New Jersey, and the Saratoga School of Orchestral Studies, is Bassoon Coach for the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra, and teaches and coaches privately. He has given Master Classes in the United States, Europe, Asia, and South America, and has coached chamber music at the Curtis Institute of Music. He also has been a PSIA certified ski instructor at Hunter Mountain in New York since 2003, and is married to fellow Philadelphia Orchestra Bassoonist and Contrabassoonist Holly Blake.
