About Us

Who are we?
We are the musicians of the Philadelphia Orchestra.
We are the artist performers, the teachers, the coaches, the mentors-- the musical core of Philadelphia. Most recently, we reminded the world that “The Philadelphia Orchestra, under the baton of Yannick Nézet-Séguin, is a truly world-class aspect of our city” in our widely publicized presence at Pope Francis’ Philadelphia visit.
As individuals, we are chamber musicians at our core; our members perform locally from the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society and New York’s Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society to nationally and abroad.
As individuals, we are teachers, with our members’ roster including the Curtis Institute of Music, Temple University, Yale University, Peabody Conservatory, Juilliard School; the New World Symphony, Sphinx Organization, Philadelphia Youth Orchestra, and Project440.
And as the collective Philadelphia Orchestra Musicians? We are greater than the sum of our parts.
We are a cumulative 1,050,000 hours of practice prior to any one of us winning an audition for this great Orchestra. That’s the 10,000-hour rule applied to the artistic athleticism required to reach the level worthy of the Philadelphia Orchestra.
We need not imagine how that collective talent sounds, that collective that performs as the 105 musicians of the Philadelphia Orchestra: six thousand pairs of ears hear every week the results of lifelong grit, discipline, and love of music that permeates the soul of this Orchestra. The musical soul about which critics the world over have said, most recently:
“Such artistry is more than service to the work and the customer but rather a relinquishing of the soul.” Sächsische Zeitung — May 26, 2015
Westfälischer Anzeiger — May 29, 2015 “There is no doubt about it, the Americans are a great, world-class orchestra under inspired leadership. Thrilling!”
“….the Philadelphia Orchestra, it is more than ever one of the best symphonic ensembles we have today.” ConcertoNet.com — June 1, 2015
Wiener Zeitung — June 3, 2015 “If one can believe the American press, the Philadelphia Orchestra sounds better than ever since music director Yannick Nézet-Séguin began his tenure. After the appearance by the venerable ensemble, which numbers among the ‘Big Five’ in the US, one cannot contradict this opinion."
In essence, we are yours: your musicians, your citizens, your musical messengers.
